US: Obama Jewish voter ratings boost

In the ongoing contest between US president Barack Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney to win over Jewish voters, recent opinion polls have shown a small yet significant boost in popularity for the incumbent.

According to Gallup’s latest poll, seventy percent of Jewish voters say they intend to support President Obama, versus only twenty-five percent for Romney.

Like most democrat candidates before him, Obama has enjoyed overwhelming support from the American Jewish community. However some Jewish groups appear to have been disillusioned by the administration’s Middle East policy, in particular in regards to Israel which many feel has been neglected over the past 4 years.

A debate over whether or not to name Jerusalem as the Israeli capital which broke out during the National Democratic Convention last month has been characterised by some as a demonstration of the party’s muddled attitude towards the Jewish state and a sign of deep divisions within its membership.

But some analysts have predicted that support for Obama amongst Jewish voters will follow the trend of 2008 and continue to grow as the election date draws closer.
