Angela Merkel given ADL human rights prize

20 march 2014

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded the ‘Joseph Prize for Human Rights’ by the Anti-Defamation League. Merkel joins the likes of former US President George H.W. Bush, late Jordanian King Hussein, and a number of former Israeli prime ministers in the winning the award.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel:

"I do value this honour, as a sign of trust in me and in our country, as proof of a close and reliable trans-Atlantic partnership and as encouragement to continue to advocate humanity and the rule of law, the way the Anti-Defamation League has been doing it for more than 100 years."

ADL chief Abraham Foxman said that Merkel had pursed human rights vigorously.

ADL National Director, Abraham Foxman:

"We know that as head of a government, the pursuit of human rights is not your only responsibility. Concerns about security, economic growth, social cohesion, foreign relations and domestic politics all coexist and sometimes compete with concerns about human rights. For that very reason, your clear commitment to promoting human rights and the privileged position you record to their protection distinguishes you and makes you such a highly deserving recipient of this prize."

Foxman praised Merkel for recognizing the significance of biblical Jewish rituals.

ADL National Director, Abraham Foxman:

“Though polls show that a majority of Germans disapproved of circumcision, you stood by your conviction and your commitment for as you know, without the right to perform this ritual, one that is central to Jewish faith and universally practised by Jewish communities, there would be no future for Jews in Germany and Germany would become Juden-rein."

The ADL is a 101-year-old US organisation, concerned with the promotion of Jewish human rights and campaigns to put an end to anti-Semitism across the world.
