Egypt Mursi Shimon Peres friend letter

19 october 2012

A spokesman for Mohammed Mursi has confirmed that the Egyptian President had sent a letter to Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres, calling him a “good friend”.

The letter, which was presented to Peres by ambassador Atef Salem, caused outcry in Egypt, with many claiming it was a fabrication. One comment on social media network Twitter expressed hope that published images of the document had been created using Photoshop computer software.

President Mursi’s letter went on to express hopes for “maintaining and strengthening the cordial relations which so happily exist between our two countries” and expressed the “highest esteem and consideration” for the Israeli President.

Earlier this year President Peres reportedly wrote to his Egyptian counterpart expressing warm wishes for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
