US: Israeli-Palestinian Parliament adverts

3 october 2012

Advertisements have appeared both online and in the New York Times hoping to attract 1,500 Israeli and Palestinian candidates over the age of 21 to participate in a fresh new initiative to establish an Israeli-Palestinian confederation and joint parliament.

The project is the brain child of Israeli-born lawyer Josef Avesar and aims to reestablish dialogues after direct negotiations between the two countries broke down in 2010.

The 300-strong parliament will not pose a threat to existing Israeli or Palestinian legislatures as both governments would have right of veto over any bills passed by the group.

Elections for the planned joint-parliament are to be held at the end of this year and eligible parties are invited to submit their candidacy to the confederation website, although some have pointed out that with a board of directors based in the US it is unclear where the Parliament will convene once elected.
