Barcelona football club has invited former Hamas captive Gilad Shalit to attend the team’s upcoming match against chief national rival Real Madrid, despite complaints by pro-Palestinian activists in Spain.
Club vice president Carles Vilarrubí commented “Barcelona is a place of unity not divisions” and that the invitation does not indicate in any way that the club takes a position in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Shalit was released in a prisoner exchange with Hamas last October after nearly five years in captivity. He is well known for his love of sports, having frequently attended basketball matches since his release.
